Have you ever felt like you were sucked into a hole of darkness and didn’t know how to get out of it? For those of you who answered yes, please know that you aren’t alone. There are so many people like you that get sucked into a black hole of depression, fear, self-doubt, suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, identity crisis, bad relationships, etc. While in this dark abyss, you may feel alone and so far away from God.
Thankfully, God is closer to us than we think. Last year, I spiraled into a deep and dark pit of depression. While stuck in this place of despair, I questioned my identity and purpose for being here on earth. I was a mess. I had friends and family members praying and encouraging me during this time. However, I knew God was the only person who could rescue me. I prayed and asked God to help me out of the sunken place that I lived in for months. I needed an encounter with my Heavenly Father and needed to be reminded of who I am in Him.
The Unbecoming Retreat hosted by Dr. Eboni L. Truss was the lifebuoy that God extended to me so I wouldn’t succumb to the darkness. I have attended a few retreats and I’m sure you have too. However, no retreat I attended before shifted my life the way the Unbecoming Retreat did. The Unbecoming Retreat is an aspect of the global Unbecoming Movement that Dr. Truss spearheaded in 2020. Dr. Truss spent years operating out of an identity that was contrary to who God said she should BE. Going through her own journey of unbecoming, which requires the shedding of a false identity to embrace one’s God-given identity, Dr. Truss realized there were others who desired to unbecome the false version of themselves that they had accepted as their true identity.
As a serial entrepreneur who is called to minister in the marketplace, Dr. Truss kicked off the Unbecoming Movement with the Unbecoming: The Business Detox (UBD), which is an invitation to people who are called to the marketplace to stop becoming who the “business gurus” say they should become and BE who God says they are. Understanding that there were people outside of the marketplace who needed to experience the transformational process of unbecoming, Dr. Truss through the Unbecoming Retreat provided a safe and intimate environment for people in and outside of the marketplace to encounter God and agree with Him concerning their God-given identity.
In December 2021, I, along with individuals from around the country, gathered in the mountains of Townsend, Tennessee. No words can adequately describe what took place on the mountaintop. Many of us came with the expectation of encountering God, but outside of that, we didn’t know what would happen during the weekend. However, our hearts and minds were open to whatever God wanted to do in and through us.
Upon my arrival at our beautiful cabin, I instantly felt a sense of peace that I had been desperately seeking for months as I stepped inside and greeted women who are now my sisters. The retreat was an oasis for those who thirst for healing, peace, joy, love, and an uplifting and supportive community. We attended activation sessions that required us to confront our false beliefs about who we are and how we are supposed to show up in the world. We had to let go of the lies that we told ourselves and have heard from other people concerning our identity. We decided to seek God to know the truth of who He created us to BE before the foundation of the world.
As we continually uprooted what held us back from living out who we are called to BE, we transcended to a place of freedom that we had not known individually and collectively. We experienced breakthroughs and transformation in such a way that we knew our lives would never be the same. We unmasked ourselves and became vulnerable and honest with ourselves and each other. The Unbecoming Retreat requires you to look deep inside of yourself and explore those places you avoid. It was an amazing experience to see women showing up for themselves and each other.
It’s fascinating how women from all walks of life can unite and ignite each other when a safe haven like the Unbecoming Retreat is created for them to do so. We laughed, cried, dined together, and spoke life into each other during the retreat. Thankfully, the Unbecoming Retreat isn’t a one-time experience. The retreat is currently held June and December each year. Unbecoming is a lifelong evolutionary process that allows us to discover the truth of who God says we Be. If you are ready to begin the journey of unbecoming and realign with who God called you to BE, then join us on June 23-26, 2022, for the next Unbecoming Retreat. I promise you won’t regret your decision to come and unbecome if you get a yes from the Holy Spirit.
